Yachting – Chasing the Good Life

Chasing pirates

A little piece of trivia about yachting that is fun to bring out if you are enjoying an afternoon on a friend's yacht is that the word “yacht” is actually Dutch and the original spelling is “Jacht”.  The translation of the original word is “hunt” because the yacht was created to give the Dutch navy a tool to hunt down pirates in shallow water.  But these days we are far more interested in chasing the good life on board a luxury yacht than going after pirates.

yachting

Lifestyle choice

It didn’t take long for yachting to become a lifestyle choice for those that could afford such luxury.  It is fascinating that yachting was enjoyed as far back as the early 1800s where there are references in history that King Charles II was a huge yachting enthusiast.  So we are in good company if we have come to love yachting too and its small wonder that it makes us feel like kings and queens when we are on board a luxury yacht cruising entirely for our pleasure.

Some like it hot

Today when you think of the word “yacht”, you almost always associate it with private boats kept for the pleasure of those who can afford a large seafaring ship dedicated to relaxation, romance and pleasure.  That image is wonderfully displayed in the delightful movie Some like it Hot with Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis in which Tony tells the sexy “Sugar” played by Marilyn that he is waiting for a signal from his wine steward on board his yacht for the time to return from the beach for cocktails.

Yachting

Yachting – Motor or sail?

When you start to think about the kind of yacht you wish to buy or charter, you have a few decisions to make.  For one thing, you can buy a sailing or motorised yacht.  Sailing seems so natural and you don’t have to carry as much fuel (although a good sailing yacht will still have some ability to get to shore using a motor so you are never in danger of being stranded).   Also what a wonderful way to pass the morning watching the crew of your yacht put up and manoeuvre the sails to get you surfing the winds at sea and letting them take you along.

Buying a yacht

A yacht is almost always a large boat except perhaps if it is devoted to racing.  But for luxury and relaxation, having plenty of space on the yacht is important.  If you are going to buy a new yacht, you should walk the boat over many times and picture different ways you will entertain family and friends and be sure you have plenty of accommodations not only for the largest party you might take with you to sea but also for a good sized crew you will have along to care for the yacht itself as well as for you and your guests.  Your chef should have an ample galley with room for plenty of provisions if you want to stock the yacht for several days or weeks at sea.  And there should be the proper facilities to store fine wines and other beverages for your wine steward to work with during your voyage.

By making sure your yacht is well designed for the lifestyle you want during your outings, you will get lots of good use from it each year.  And if you are going to charter, you can look forward to bringing your same high standards to picking just the right yacht, captain and crew each time as well so your adventure at sea is just as enjoyable and luxurious as you always wanted it to be.

Learning to sail

Not many people know that you can actually learn to sail in just a couple of days, OK, you won’t be competing with salty sea dogs after just a short time, but you will know your Port from your Starboard, you’ll also learn some basic rope work, how to enter and exit a marina, maritime rules and many other things necessary to make you feel safe out on the water – Read learn to sail in Majorca.

If you want to learn to sail on a structured course, then RYA sailing courses are perfect for this. For many people, sailing and spending time out on the water is the ultimate leisure pursuit, for others, it is part of their job.

These courses will equip you with the skills and learning to be confident out at sea, whether in your own boat or a charter yacht – Read RYA sailing courses.

Learning to motorboat

Sailing is not for everyone; many people prefer the simplicity of a motorboat compared to handling ropes and sails. Of course, until you have experienced motor boating, you’ll never really know if it is for you and that’s why taking part on a learn to motorboat course is a great idea – Read learn to motorboat.

Sailing can be quite physical involving lots of rope work, it can also be quite tricky to master. Many people prefer motorboating, it is less physical, not reliant on wind conditions and usually a lot faster than sailing. Sea schools on the island run a number of RYA motor courses for those who enjoy motorboating, ranging from an introduction to motor cruising for complete beginners to advanced pilotage to Yachtmaster – Read RYA motor courses.

cruise Palma Mallorca

The city of Palma de Mallorca

There are very few places on this planet that can match the charm & beauty of Palma, from the majestic Gothic Cathedral to the medieval streets, churches, aristocratic townhouses & public squares, this city will charm & romance you. Palma has a delightful cross of influences, reflecting its checkered past of African and European control. It is the largest city on Majorca — a big, bustling place, with most of the tourist action in the old part of town.

Mainly due to its turbulent history of invasions, Palma has become a welcoming and mature city and has a genuinely friendly attitude towards international visitors. Edgy districts, traditional taverns, exclusive neighbourhoods & modern art rub shoulders with a very vibrant foodie & shopping scene & all of this located on the beautiful Bay of Palma.

Palma de Mallorca (Majorca) Cruise Port Facilities

The main ferry and cruise terminals are served by the Estacion Maritima, which offers a bank, ATM, toilet facilities and taxi and bus links to the city centre. Yachts and ships moor up in the port, and plenty of bars and restaurants are located in the vicinity. Compared with eateries in the city centre, though, they really aren't very appealing. It's definitely worth the journey into town. A word of caution: If walking from the port to the city centre, be aware of the fast-moving traffic on the busy road between the two.

Good to Know

Some shops and restaurants, particularly those catering for tourists and visitors, remain open all day, but the majority observe a traditional siesta between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

If you're staying in Palma for a longer period of time, it may be beneficial to rent a car. Renting a car is not recommended on a short cruise call because roads can be winding, mountainous and slow to negotiate.

Hot Tip

Buy tickets for the City Sightseeing hop-on hop-off bus tour of Palma. It’s not expensive and is a great way to see the city with 17 bus stops at remarkable destinations. Hop off at any of the stops along the route and hop back on at your leisure with your 24 or 48-hour ticket.

El Toro – (The Bull)

El Toro

El Toro – updated 15 February 2023.

El Toro is a picturesque village located on the southwest coast of Majorca, one of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. This charming village is situated just a few kilometers away from the popular resort of Santa Ponsa and offers a different experience from the bustling tourist hotspots that surround it. With its traditional architecture, stunning scenery, and friendly locals, El Toro is an ideal destination for those seeking an authentic Majorcan experience.

El Toro is also home to a beautiful marina, Port Adriano, which was designed by the renowned French architect Philippe Starck. The marina is a popular destination for boaters and yacht enthusiasts, and its elegant design and luxurious amenities make it a must-see attraction for visitors to the area.

Expats

There are close to 2,500 residents in El Toro consisting of a mix of locals and expats from Britain, Germany, Scandinavia and other European countries.

El Toro

El Toro is sandwiched between two of the most notorious resorts on the island, Santa Ponsa and Magaluf; however, you would not know this when you are there because it is generally tourist free.

Pure Salt Port Adriano

At the top of the cliff overlooking the beach and the marina, there is a 5-star, adults only hotel called Pure Salt Port Adriano. The hotel is particularly popular with golfers because they have an on-site golf simulator and there are nearby golf courses.

Carrer Gran Via

El Toro has a main street, Carrer Gran Via, which is referred to as 'El Toro, Nation Street' by the local British expats. On this street, you will find a number of popular eating and drinking establishments including the wonderful Med 54, a British-Mediterranean style restaurant and bar.

Other establishments of note are Café Kebab, a firm favourite with the locals and expats, Bohemia (a Spanish bar), Thai El Toro, The Anchor Bar and Bistro 49.

Port Adriano

From Carrer Gran Via, a steep road takes you down to Port Adriano, one of the most modern marinas in the Mediterranean and quickly becoming the preferred marina for superyachts.

El Toro

To the right of Port Adriano, is a lovely small beach called Playa El Toro (official name is Cala de ses Penyes Roges). The beach is 250m long with fine-grained, golden sand and despite being popular during the high season, there is usually lots of room to find your own piece of beach.

Chicken Shack

A very popular eating and drinking haunt is Restaurante Playa El Toro, which is located close to the water and has its own swimming pool. The restaurant is often referred to as The Chicken Shack or Tin Hut due to its tin roof. The food here is really good and the prices are very reasonable.

The Ship

Towering over the Chicken Shack is a very large block of residential apartments nicknamed ‘The Ship’ because from the sea and at night when the apartments are lit up, it resembles a cruise ship.

The Ship is one of the oldest residential complexes in the area and is a mix of well-renovated apartments and apartments that are similar to how they were many decades ago. Residents of The Ship have some of the best views available in El Toro, looking out towards the sea, Port Adriano and the beach.

Overall, El Toro is a beautiful village that offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Its traditional architecture, friendly locals, and range of attractions make it an ideal destination for those seeking an authentic Majorcan experience. Whether you're looking to explore the outdoors, sample local cuisine, or simply relax and soak up the sun, El Toro is a destination that is not to be missed.

Flight delay compensation

Did you know about Flight delay compensation?

Let’s admit it, at some time, you’ve probably missed a flight due to cancellation or you’ve had to wait at the airport for many hours due to delays. In addition to the major disruption this can cause to holiday and work schedules, it is also a stressful experience, particularly if you have children with you or tight deadlines to meet such as connecting flights or events.

Did you know that if you had a delayed or cancelled flight in the past 3 years, you could receive €600 per passenger, regardless of the ticket price? Additionally, you could be entitled to claim for luggage problems such as missing bags, delayed bags or damaged bags and also for out of pocket expenses such as hotels, meals & more.

Air passengers have rights. In the EU they are covered by EU REGULATION EC 261.

Sa Calobra Serpentine

A Scenic Marvel of Majorca

Sa Calobra Serpentine – updated 12 February 2023.

Nestled in the Tramuntana mountain range, in the northwest of the island, the Sa Calobra Serpentine road is one of the most spectacular and scenic driving routes in Majorca. The winding road was constructed in the 1930s and is renowned for its challenging turns and breathtaking vistas. It is a testament to human engineering and a must-visit attraction for visitors to the island. Just 13km long, the Sa Calobra Serpentine (MA-2141) is one of the most scenic drives in the world.

Scenic drive Majorca

26 hairpin turns

The Sa Calobra Serpentine road is a marvel of road engineering, with a total of 26 hairpin turns leading down to the Sa Calobra cove. The road is just over 12 kilometres long and has an average gradient of 7.1%. The twists and turns of the road make for a thrilling drive and provide breath-taking views of the surrounding landscape.

Stunning views

At the top of the road, drivers are treated to stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea. As you descend down the serpentine road, the views become even more spectacular, with winding roads leading down to the picturesque Sa Calobra cove, a small pebble beach with turquoise waters.

Best driving route Majorca

The Snake

The route is referred to as ‘The Snake’ by locals but ‘Spaghetti’ would be more apt and was built specifically to avoid tunnels resulting in a road that snakes through the landscape often with a gradient in excess of 7%, which is why it is very popular with cyclists and is mentioned in our ‘best cycling routes’ section.

Knotted Tie

With an 800m descent over 12km and the infamous 270-degree loop known as the ‘Knotted Tie’ and incredible mountain views of Mallorca’s highest mountain, Puig Major, the road to Sa Calobra is an adventure in its own right.

Sa Calobra Serpentine

Antonio Paretti

The Sa Calobra Serpentine was manually built in 1932 and was created by the engineer Antonio Paretti and is a masterpiece of twists and turns; however, it is one of the most dangerous roads in Spain with no marked central line and no guardrails and much too much traffic especially during the summer.

Extremely slippy

At times, the road is very narrow and impassable for 2 cars at the same time and on rainy days, the asphalt becomes extremely slippy. It should not be attempted by those who don’t know how to reverse.

Sa Calobra Serpentine

Despite the road’s popularity, it is still relatively isolated and untouched. There are no service stations, shops, or restaurants along the way, so it’s important to make sure your vehicle is in good condition and that you have enough supplies for the journey.

50 Curves

The 25-minute route is an unforgettable and sensational experience but definitely not for anyone who is nervous of steep, winding descents. It has more than 50 curves with the majority of those being hairpins and the gradient can reach as high as 11.5%.

Sa Calobra Serpentine

Cycling

The Sa Calobra Serpentine road is a popular destination for cyclists and motorcyclists, and in recent years has been featured in the Vuelta a España, one of the most prestigious cycling races in the world.

Sa Calobra

Sa Calobra is a small village on the coast that is widely regarded as having the best unspoilt cove on the island. It also has a hidden beach and an incredible gorge – Es Torrent de Pareis. Tourists flock to this location in their hundreds all year around to admire the jaw-dropping scenery and to enjoy the incredible journey there with its twisting roads and spectacular views.

Overall, the Sa Calobra Serpentine road is a true wonder of Majorca, a testament to human ingenuity and a marvel of natural beauty.
