Sailing is not for everyone, many people prefer the simplicity of a motorboat compared to handling ropes and sails. Of course, until you have experienced motor boating, you’ll never really know if it is for you and that’s why taking part on a learn to motorboat course is a great idea.
There’s a couple of sea schools on the island who run these types of courses & experience days – they only last 1 day and are designed to be fun and interesting and are a great introduction to motor cruising for complete beginners. You will learn the basics of handling a boat as part of a crew, learn safety on board and assist at the helm. During the day, there will be plenty of time to relax and just enjoy the experience of motor cruising on the Med. This course is ideal for introducing groups of friends or families to motor boating.
The syllabus for the learn to motorboat course is good fun and some of the skills you will learn include dealing with emergency situations, coming alongside, anchoring and boat handling.
Our recommended sea school to learn motor boating is Deep Blue Sea Training. Their training motor yacht, ‘Deep Blue’, is berthed at Marina Cuarentena in Palma and is a Fairline Phantom 46 boasting powerful twin Volvo Penta turbocharged diesel engines driving shafts/props – quiet, clean and economical by yachting standards, air-conditioned and with a great layout and equipment at both lower and flybridge helms including radar.
Their ribs are a robust Avon Adventure 620 with 6 jockey seats and a powerful yet economical 4-stroke Suzuki 140hp outboard, and their latest addition is a 7m Tiger rib with the latest generation ultra-quiet Suzuki 150hp outboard. They use Seadoo jetskis for their jetski courses, and these are available for daily rental to holders of a PWC certificate and/or ICC with PWC endorsement.
The Start Motoring Certificate is awarded on completion of the course.
