RYA Theory Courses

You can’t escape RYA theory courses, they are mandatory if you wish to achieve RYA qualifications. There’s a lot more to boating than just parking a rib, or coming alongside, or stowing a line. There is also quite a lot of theory involved ranging from the Essential Navigation & Seamanship course all the way up to Yachtmaster Ocean, Celestial Navigation.

There are plenty of places online where you can do these courses; however many people prefer the classroom environment learning with others. There are also many publications; which will help you study for and pass the RYA theory parts of these courses such as: RYA Navigation Handbook, RYA Navigation Exercises, RYA Weather Handbook, RYA Sail Cruising Log Book, RYA Motor Cruising Log Book, RYA Manual of Seamanship by Tom Cunliffe, Seaman’s Guide to the Rule of the Road by JWW Ford and Yachtmaster for Sail and Power by Alison Noice.

Our recommended RYA Training Centres are Deep Blue Sea Training based in Santa CatalinaPalma and Solaris Sailing based in Port Andratx.

RYA Motor Courses

RYA Motor Courses

If you want to learn to motorboat on a structured course, then RYA motor courses are perfect for this. There is no doubt about it, sailing is fun and it is difficult to beat the thrill of skimming across the water powered by the wind in your sails. However, it is not for everyone.

Sailing can be quite physical involving lots of rope work, it can also be quite tricky to master. Many people prefer motorboating, it is less physical, not reliant on wind conditions and usually a lot faster than sailing. Our recommended sea schools run a number of RYA motor courses for those who enjoy motorboating, ranging from an introduction to motor cruising for complete beginners to advanced pilotage to Yachtmaster. As a starter, we recommend the Powerboat Level 2 course. After just 2 days and if you pass the course, you are legal to drive a powerboat such as a Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIB) or any kind of sports boat up to 10m in length.

Our recommended RYA Training Centres are Deep Blue Sea Training based in Santa CatalinaPalma and Solaris Sailing based in Port Andratx.

This practical course can be supplemented with Day Skipper theory course either side of the practical week with 2 days classroom-based theory in navigation beforehand and afterwards. As yacht crew, Powerboat & PWC courses are important as these qualifications are required by most Captains.

This two-day entry level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed and collision regulations. The course can be taken at an inland or a coastal location.

The course content is: Launching and recovery, boat handling, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, man overboard.

Ability after the course: Self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of own limitations and those of craft.

Personal Watercraft Proficiency Course

Personal watercraft can be single-seater machines or can take two or three people. They are fast and exciting, but need to be handled with care.

Whether you just want to have a go on holiday or buy your own machine, the Personal Watercraft course will teach you how to get the best from it. The course is designed for first time and experienced riders alike. Increasingly the certificate is required for launching in UK harbours, but is also needed if you want to use your PW abroad.

Most courses take place over one day and can be taken either on a centre's craft or your own.

Yachtmaster Courses

Yachtmaster Training Mallorca

The RYA Yachtmaster qualification is a highly prized certificate of competence proving the ability of the holder to handle either a motor boat or sailing boat in certain prescribed conditions.

RYA Training is carried out in more than 20 countries and currently there are around 13,000 professionals working as yacht crew on commercial vessels around the world using RYA Certificates of Competence.

When commercially endorsed, Yachtmaster licences provide significant privileges and for many sailors, the Yachtmaster Offshore or Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence are the ultimate aim and a required step on the way to a Deck Officer career.

Unlike other courses in the cruising programme, there is no formal training to complete in order to become a Yachtmaster. Instead, provided that you have sufficient experience and sea time, you can put yourself forward for an exam to test your skills and knowledge. If you have not previously undertaken any formal training it is unlikely that you will pass the exam.

The pre-course experience includes, two days as a skipper, 800 miles and 12 night hours. Students will also need valid VHF and (RYA) First Aid certificates.

If you don't have the requisite sea miles under your belt, we recommend a call to milebuilders.com – who organise a number of milebuilding days & delivery trips throughout the year for individuals or groups.

It can take many years to build the kind of experience and sea miles under your belt required for Yachtmaster, unless structured milebuilding is built into the equation.

Yachtmaster offshore exam preparation

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence is a highly regarded worldwide qualification proving the experience and competence of a skipper. Sufficient experience and sea time form the eligibility criteria for taking the Yachtmaster exam. The Yachtmaster offshore sail exam preparation week provides five days practical boat handling and revision of the theory with all aspects of the examination organised. This is an intensive course which will challenge you by sailing onto and off marina pontoons and mooring buoys, sail trim for simulated engine and steering failures, man overboard, blind navigation, mooring up in tight spots and anchoring under sail.

Conversion courses

Holders of the Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore sail Certificate of Competence may take a practical conversion exam to obtain the equivalent power certificate of competence. Candidates may also convert from power to sail. The same rules apply whether you are converting from sail to power, or from power to sail, but the practical exam for converting from power to sail may take slightly longer.

Our recommended sea school in Mallorca for Yachtmaster training is Deep Blue Sea Training.

This level of RYA training is a specialty for Deep Blue Sea Training and their candidates come from many locations around the globe. With a remarkable exam success rate, professional training support (pre and post course) and a constant stream of positive reviews and feedback, they are quickly establishing ourselves as the professional choice for RYA training in the Med.

Powerboat & Jet Ski Courses

For some freedom out on the water, you should consider Powerboat & Jet Ski courses.

RYA Powerboat Level 2 course

If you’re really looking to have some fun at sea then we highly recommend that you take the Powerboat Level 2 course at one of the RYA training schools on the island. After just 2 days and on successful completion of the course, you will be awarded the Powerboat Level 2 certificate; which means you are legal to drive a powerboat such as a Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIB) or any kind of sports boat up to 10m in length.

This is a really fun course, a little challenging and very popular especially among boat crew who require the certificate in order to ferry yacht passengers inland from their yachts.

Own Boat Training

The sea schools provide group training sessions (max 3 persons) or if you have your own boat, they will give you one-to-one tuition and training. The course is not all practical and does involve some theory but mostly, its all about being out on the water practicing low-speed and close-quarters handling, man overboard recovery and an introduction to basic high-speed drills.

After the course you should be a self-sufficient power-boater on open planing craft up to 10m in the right conditions, aware of your own limitations and those of the craft. At the end of a successful course you may also be eligible for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

Personal Water Craft courses

Also recommended are Personal Watercraft (Jet Ski) proficiency courses; which are 1 day in duration. The syllabus includes handling at both low and high speed, launching and recovery of the Jet Ski, short passage plans with position fixing and essential safety information plus how to avoid collisions and stay safe at sea.
