Yachting – Chasing the Good Life

Chasing pirates

A little piece of trivia about yachting that is fun to bring out if you are enjoying an afternoon on a friend's yacht is that the word “yacht” is actually Dutch and the original spelling is “Jacht”.  The translation of the original word is “hunt” because the yacht was created to give the Dutch navy a tool to hunt down pirates in shallow water.  But these days we are far more interested in chasing the good life on board a luxury yacht than going after pirates.

yachting

Lifestyle choice

It didn’t take long for yachting to become a lifestyle choice for those that could afford such luxury.  It is fascinating that yachting was enjoyed as far back as the early 1800s where there are references in history that King Charles II was a huge yachting enthusiast.  So we are in good company if we have come to love yachting too and its small wonder that it makes us feel like kings and queens when we are on board a luxury yacht cruising entirely for our pleasure.

Some like it hot

Today when you think of the word “yacht”, you almost always associate it with private boats kept for the pleasure of those who can afford a large seafaring ship dedicated to relaxation, romance and pleasure.  That image is wonderfully displayed in the delightful movie Some like it Hot with Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis in which Tony tells the sexy “Sugar” played by Marilyn that he is waiting for a signal from his wine steward on board his yacht for the time to return from the beach for cocktails.

Yachting

Yachting – Motor or sail?

When you start to think about the kind of yacht you wish to buy or charter, you have a few decisions to make.  For one thing, you can buy a sailing or motorised yacht.  Sailing seems so natural and you don’t have to carry as much fuel (although a good sailing yacht will still have some ability to get to shore using a motor so you are never in danger of being stranded).   Also what a wonderful way to pass the morning watching the crew of your yacht put up and manoeuvre the sails to get you surfing the winds at sea and letting them take you along.

Buying a yacht

A yacht is almost always a large boat except perhaps if it is devoted to racing.  But for luxury and relaxation, having plenty of space on the yacht is important.  If you are going to buy a new yacht, you should walk the boat over many times and picture different ways you will entertain family and friends and be sure you have plenty of accommodations not only for the largest party you might take with you to sea but also for a good sized crew you will have along to care for the yacht itself as well as for you and your guests.  Your chef should have an ample galley with room for plenty of provisions if you want to stock the yacht for several days or weeks at sea.  And there should be the proper facilities to store fine wines and other beverages for your wine steward to work with during your voyage.

By making sure your yacht is well designed for the lifestyle you want during your outings, you will get lots of good use from it each year.  And if you are going to charter, you can look forward to bringing your same high standards to picking just the right yacht, captain and crew each time as well so your adventure at sea is just as enjoyable and luxurious as you always wanted it to be.

Not many people know that you can actually learn to sail in just a couple of days, OK, you won’t be competing with salty sea dogs after just a short time, but you will know your Port from your Starboard, you’ll also learn some basic rope work, how to enter and exit a marina, maritime rules and many other things necessary to make you feel safe out on the water – Read learn to sail in Majorca.

Powerboat & Jetski courses

Wind in your hair

Powerboats are a great way to explore the island's stunning coastline and secluded coves. You can rent a powerboat and take it out on your own, or you can hire a licensed skipper who can take you to the best spots on the island. With a powerboat, you can travel at high speeds and enjoy the thrill of the wind in your hair as you navigate the open sea.

Jetskis, on the other hand, are a more intense water sport. With a Jetski, you can zip across the waves at high speeds, performing thrilling turns and jumps as you go. This is a great activity for those who are looking for an adrenaline rush and a fun way to cool off in the heat of the summer.

One of the best things about using powerboats and jetskis on the island of Majorca is the opportunity to see the island from a unique perspective. You can explore hidden coves and beaches that are inaccessible by land, and you can get up close and personal with the island's stunning natural beauty. This is a great way to make memories and take amazing photos that you'll cherish for years to come.

RYA Powerboat Level 2 course

Powerboat courses

This is a really fun course, a little challenging and very popular especially among boat crew who require the certificate in order to ferry yacht passengers inland from their yachts. This is an ideal course to take prior to attending a Start Motor Cruising course.

Own Boat Training

The sea schools provide group training sessions (max 3 persons) or if you have your own boat, they will give you one-to-one tuition and training. The course is not all practical and does involve some theory but mostly, it's all about being out on the water practicing low-speed and close-quarters handling, man overboard recovery and an introduction to basic high-speed drills.

International Certificate of Competence

After the course you should be a self-sufficient power-boater on open planing craft up to 10m in the right conditions, aware of your own limitations and those of the craft. At the end of a successful course, you may also be eligible for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

Personal Watercraft courses

Also recommended are Personal Watercraft (Jet Ski) proficiency courses, which are 1 day in duration. The syllabus includes handling at both low and high speed, launching and recovery of the Jet Ski, short passage plans with position fixing and essential safety information plus how to avoid collisions and stay safe at sea.

Whether you're cruising along the coast or stopping to swim and snorkel in one of the island's many secluded coves, motorboating is a great way to see the island from a unique perspective.

Start Motor Cruising

This is an entry level course and can be run in conjunction with higher level courses for mixed ability groups. This course is ideal for introducing friends or family members to crewing a motorboat, and for giving them an understanding of how they can assist the helm. Some of the skills you will learn include dealing with emergency situations, coming alongside, anchoring and boat handling.

Helmsman's Practical Course

This two-day course covers basic boat handling, helmsmanship, safety and basic engine maintenance. It aims to teach boat handling & safety within a defined area. It is specific to the type of boat in which the course is carried out and is therefore particularly suitable as an own boat course for new owners of motor cruisers who are conscious of the difficulty and potential hazards of boat handling in the marina. It is useful for crews as well as skippers. Apart from the obvious safety benefits of extra boat handlers on board, it adds interest if everyone can contribute to the trip.

A boater’s paradise

There’s no doubt about it, the island of Mallorca is beautiful. It can take a couple of weeks to really see the best the island has to offer, from picturesque coastal villages to majestic mountain views, Mallorca provides many opportunities to take picture-perfect photographs – however to really see just how beautiful the island is, it should be viewed from the water!

With hidden bays that can only be accessed by boat, perfect non-tidal waters, incredible weather and stunning views, Mallorca is a boater’s paradise and one of the best places in the world to learn to sail.

There are many sailing schools and yacht clubs on the island that offer courses for sailors of all levels. These courses typically cover topics like sail trimming, tacking and jibing, navigation, and safety. Sailing bug

Once you’ve mastered the basics and have the ‘sailing bug’, there are further courses available from sailing for complete beginners to becoming qualified as a skipper. There really is no better place in Europe to learn how to sail.

If you get the sailing bug, the time will come soon when you will want to take that next step in providing a wonderful get away experience for your family by purchasing a yacht.

Perhaps you have been thinking about buying a yacht and taking lessons to learn how to use it. Many sea schools provide own-boat training so that really is an option.

It might be that you are not familiar enough yet with what might go with yacht ownership so you want to enjoy some outings on a yacht with just you and your family before making that decision.

Another drawback for some is the overhead of taking care of a yacht, particularly off season when you really don’t want to think about the boat. But you still have to have it stored and cared for and then conditioned to go on the water when you are ready. While you can hire people to do all that, it does seem like a lot of trouble, particularly if you don’t know if a yacht is a good fit to your lifestyle. So a good option is to charter a yacht for a week or so to enjoy the experience of yachting while you make the decision about ownership.
